Here at Holly Heider Chapple Flowers, we love all things Southern.  That’s why, when we had the opportunity to work with the fabulous team at Southern Weddings to design custom bouquets for a feature on some of the South’s most celebrated fictional Southern heroines, we jumped at the chance.  Utilizing quotes and details from cherished Southern novels and films, the ladies at Southern Weddings let us run with colorful, textured inspiration to create some truly imaginative designs- perfect for these storied Southern belles.

We’re taking just a moment to delve into the inspiration and floral nitty-gritty behind each of our beautifully blooming bouquets below, but you won’t want to miss the real deal!  Be sure to scoop up the most recent  Southern Weddings, V7, to get the full-gloss glory of these romantic petals in print.  With photos by Katie Stoops Photography and some gorgeous styling by Southern Weddings’ Creative Director, Emily Thomas, this is a must-see feature.  After our little tease below, we just know you’ll be inspired to search out the full scoop for a second heaping helping of this sweet story.

What Southern belle hasn’t dreamed of a love as passionate and enduring as that of Allie and Noah in Nicholas Sparks’ The Notebook?  When designing her bouquet, we went for full-out romance.  Luscious peonies, white and blue scabiosa, ethereal Queen Anne’s lace and snow-on-the-mountain greens graced this design.  Blue tweedia is the perfect “something blue” tucked significantly into Allie’s arrangement.  Nostalgic, sweet and with an air of nearly-lost love and longing, Allie’s bouquet is tied off with a soft expanse of pale blue ribbon.

The epitome of a Southern belle, from her teased tresses to her over-the-top, pepto bismol-drenched ceremony, Shelby Eatenton’s bouquet was a no-brainer.  With a palette of blush & bashful (how could we have used any other hue?!), soft, buxom blossoms and a layered tulle cuff, this bouquet belongs to a woman who gushes with femininity.  We mixed voluptuous Constance cabbage roses with bridal pink piano cabbage roses and ladylike peonies.  Southern Weddings tied on a lacy handkerchief, elegantly monogramed, to show the significance of family to this Southern gal.

With a flair for the dramatic, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Daisy Buchanan from Louisville, Kentucky, was mesmerized by the glimmering glam of the roaring twenties.  Built around a pure, simple white calla lily, this bouquet crafted for The Great Gatsby’s leading lady is teeming with white and lavender lilac, blushing ranunculus, iris, sweet peas, opulent white calla lilies and trailing white clematis.  Wrapped with nostalgic lavender ribbon, the bouquet is decadently accented with deco-inspired gems.  Daisy would have swooned over this lush concoction of elegant and charming blossoms.

Jenny was a true flower child- soft, whimisical and as free as the passing breeze.  We created a bouquet that was as untamed as she- airy, wispy and full of light.  The delicate, vintage ribbon used to tie the bouquet was selected as a reminder of the simple yellow dress Jenny wore as a little girl, while the flourishes of daisy-like chamomile are reminiscent of the 70s floral crowns she would have donned.  Lacy peonies, vibrant poppies, peach ranunculus and orange asclepias provided an artful array of hues for the little girl turned woman who was ever searching for the bright side of Love.

This rich, textured bouquet belongs to none other than Gone With the Wind’s coy Scarlett O’Hara.  Margaret Mitchell’s debatable heroine would have been pleased with the seductive moodiness of this arrangement which incorporates deep purple double hellebores, elegant purple dianthus and purple sweet peas.  Enigmatic and mysterious, Scarlett’s dark charm is beautifully referenced with deep purple tulips, purbple scabiosa and allspice flowers.  A nod to her southern femininity is immaculately incoporated with rich, sleek magnolia leaves.  Tied off with voluptuous green velvet and silk- a subtle reference to Scarlett’s resourcefully repurposed drapes.

A bouquet isn’t likely to be the first thing on Skeeter Phelan’s mind, but she certainly wouldn’t mind this one.  Neutral, not too complex and neat with just a hint of airiness, this bouquet is as unassuming as the young reporter herself.  A bundle of contradictions, Skeeter has a cotton trust fund and a determination to right racial wrongs.  We love how this bouquet mirrors Skeeter’s inner turmoil.  Perfectly arranged Combo roses match the quiet and reserved mindset of 1960s Mississippi society, while the gunnii eucalyptus breaks all the rules, artfully trailing outside the perfect boundaries of the bouquet,  just as Skeeter herself often traipsed beyond the borders of polite conversation.  Full of texture, the barely-there blush of the astilbe and pale pink berries ties the dahlias and white patience garden roses into the mix.  Should The Help’s heroine consent to marriage, we’re sure she’d snatch up this pretty posey before heading down the aisle.

Southern tomboy Scout Finch preferred playtime to prettiness in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, but we’ve imagined her all grown up with a bouquet of her own.  Nostalgic and rustic, this bouquet incorporates a dusty mix of color that would suit Scout’s low-key nature.  Peach Juliet cabbage roses, carmel antique roses and mock orange are accented with sweet southern garden flowers like Virginia blue bells, Queen Anne’s lace, blue thistle and honeysuckle.  The white azalea pays tribute to the prized garden flower of Scout’s beloved neighbor, Miss Maudie, while blue, textured chambray ribbon is a sentimental touch- reminiscent of Scout’s childhood dungarees.

We loved crafting beautifully sentimental bouquets for these southern gals- be sure to pick up your own version in glossy!

Tara and Jason married in the Spring of 2013. The wedding and reception was held at historic Whitehall Manor. Laura Ritchie from Events In The City was the event planner and designer, and Kate Headley was the photographer of the day. Holly Heider Chapple Flowers provided all of the blooms. Tara carried a delicious mix of spring blooms many of which were from the HCF garden.

Tara’s bridal bouqeut was composed of white peony, purple and lavender lilac, pieris, silver brunia, lavender clematis, amnesia roses, purple scabiosa, and dusty miller. The bouquet was bound with specialty ribbon.

Maids carried tulips, amnesia roses, lilac, scabiosa, dusty miller, and fillers.

Our flower girl basket featured a mix of the days flowers.

The arbor was adorned with a garland of greens and flowers. Our studio makes all of our garlands by hand in the studio. This means we always have the prettiest mixes of greens. We also added our crystal chandelier to the ceremony area.

The Whitehall Chandeliers were draped with garland, flowers and hanging votives.

Each table featured an overflowing bowl of spring flowers. This wedding was beautiful. Happy married life Tara and Jason!! We loved doing your wedding flowers.

Megan and Ezra married last spring at the Thomas Birkby House. The couple had an amazing Loudoun wedding. I thought since we are all craving spring flowers it would be fun to post their beautiful blue and purple wedding flowers today. Sam Hurd photographed this beautiful event.

Bouts were created with blue muscari, blue delphinium, scabiosa, and seeded euc.

Our birch and willow chuppah was designed with delphinium, stock, larkspur, seeded euc, lady moon roses, hydrangea, tulips, clematis, blue thistle, and fillers.

Megan’s bouquet was created with blue muscari, hyacinthus, phlox, clematis, scabiosa, stock, thistle, and dusty miller.

Centerpieces were created in my vintage boxes. These boxes are a favorite of our studio.

Happy married life Megan and Ezra, we loved designing your wedding flowers!! Thankfully the sun is finally shinning strong in Virginia and I can see the first blooms on the way. I I can’t wait until these flowers are blooming again!!

Heidi and Eric married in the fall of 2011. I can hardly believe it has been a year and half since their wedding. Their gorgeous wedding was just featured on Style Me Pretty and can be seen here.  Many thanks to Megan from Events In The City for her amazing design and planning of this event. Gabe Acevas was responsible for the stunning photography. Our studio handled the flowers and my truly incredible husband Evan, did the lighting, drapes, and the installation of flowers into a boat. Yes I did give him that job!!!

Perhaps one of our most slippery installations!!! Glad this was Evans job.

Heidi’s bouquet was created in a cascading style with blue delphinium, blue aggies, blue anemone, purple dahlias, purple clematis, purple stock, purple viburnum berry, lavender roses, purple astrantia, and green seeded euc.

Maids bouquets featured more of the smokey lavender tones, a pop of burg, and less of the vibrant blues and purples.

Gorgeous!!!

Evan sewed all of the curtains for this barn with his very own sewing machine. Awesome!!! If you look closely you can see the twinkle lights in the rafters and around the posts. Evan also installed lighting in the trees to light up the outside of the barn. This was a beautiful project.

Evan’s new chandelier.

Centerpieces were created in vases wrapped in lace or in vintage silver bowls, and creamers.

This was a beautiful Loudoun Wedding and we were so honored to see it featured on Style Me Pretty!!!

This one is magic, true magic!! I am so thoroughly proud of this shoot and the work that was accomplished here in our gardens. Many thanks to photographer Anne Robert, and to Dawn Crothers Cimino of Something Vintage Rentals, together we all collaborated and styled an amazing creation right in the middle of our garden. Many thanks also to Evan who ran the leaf blower, the fog machine, and then stood in as an officiant.

It is a true thrill to produce and create a scene that will help to set trend. When I chose the flowers for this shoot, my wholesaler literally told me she didn’t think I could blend these colors together. Gold combo roses, blended with amnesia roses, and dark purple tones, In truth what I purchased from her was most certainly not enough to make magic. But here in my garden were mystical elements and tones that brought everything together. This shoot is truly trend setting shoot. From the unique color combinations, to the shape and styles of the bouquets, to the amazing ribbon treatments.  I bet this shoot goes viral.

Many thanks to Weddings Unveiled for publishing this work, and for continuously creating one of the most beautiful magazines in the industry. Thank you for promoting, publishing, supporting, and encouraging these creative shoots. We love Weddings Unveiled and we are so thankful for you!!!

The bouquet featured golden jester, white gomphrena , astrantia, flowering vine, antiqued hydrangea, and pieris from our garden. I used golden combo roses, amnesia roses, plum ranunculus, and dark purple scabiosa from the wholesaler.  A gorgeous ribbon treatment was added to the bouquet.

Here is a beautiful hair piece that was created with gold painted ranunculus. Amazing!!!

The gorgeous antiques that Dawn shared with us were amazing, it was so much fun to see them placed right in the garden!!

I now have an endless passion for Claire Pettibone gowns.

Amazingly, Anne Robert created many of the hair pieces for this shoot. Yes, our friend the photographer Anne is mighty talented. She has a new company for those pieces called Bespoke.

Farm tables from Something Vintage Rentals.

So gorgeous!!!

Our bride in a bed of hyacinth bean vine.

That day we designed several bouquets and we loved them all.

This one may be my favorite because it featured cotton blossoms. We grew cotton for a special client last year and we became obsessed with the foliage and the blooms of this flower.

I am obsessed with this bouquet it completely fills me up with love of my art and for floral design.

This bouquet pulls at my heart as well, I love, love, love the length of the bouquet. The way the vine trails down and extends the length of the bouquet makes the design rich and dreamy. The vine cascading from the bouquet is passion flower vine and it was also from my garden.

Evan built us this beautiful ceremony structure of white drape and it featured a crystal chandelier.  This was a creation that I had been dying to make, or have Evan make. Lets be honest!! Now that we have pictures of this altar, we have had several upcoming brides chose this for their ceremony.  You know the saying “build it they will come”, well it’s true.

Stunning paper products designed my Inc. Lemonade.

Here is our beautiful vegan cake baked by Sticky Fingers. I must confess that we worked until 8pm on this shoot and then we devoured that vegan cake. Who knew vegan cake could be that good, seriously it was amazing.  Let them eat cake!!

Here are some of my favorite images of the day!!

I think this is one of the most beautiful and poetic images ever, and it should be sent in for a photography award. Our gorgeous model is holding a cotton plant. Annie didn’t know what the plant was when she asked the model to hold it.  The symbolism or beauty of this never occurred to me at the time, when I saw this photo I almost fell off of the chair. Having this image of the cotton we grew makes me so happy, but secondly I love that this image declares a change in times, and a focus on true beauty.

This shoot is epic!!!

Just for fun here are pictures of Evan the leaf blower man, and Evan the officiant.

This place is so much freaking fun!!!

The latest issue of Weddings Unveiled has just been released and it’s absolutely sumptuous. Thankfully this very incredible issue also features one of our weddings. The wedding of Betty and Anthony. I have been holding onto the images from this wedding for almost an entire year. Thankfully I get to share them with you today. Evan and I provided the event decor, florals, and lighting for this wedding.  This included moving endless bales of hay, pumpkins, gourds and lanterns. Oh boy, did we ever use some lanterns!! The wedding and magnificent rehearsal dinner was designed and planned by Lisa Schulz the Posh Planner, and you can thank Kate Headley for the images that are about to WOW you.  Get ready to be mighty inspired by this perfectly fall wedding and don’t forget to pick up your issue of Weddings Unveiled.

The dinner table featured over 50 lanterns, that were hung by Evan and the table happened to overlook a polo field. Guests enjoyed hayrides, fine dinning, bluegrass music, a bonfire, and hand rolled cigars.

That was one heck of a rehearsal dinner.

Bales of straw and mums were gathered from my fathers farm market to create this ceremony area. We threw a lot of straw for this wedding!!

This image, is one of my all time favorite photos by Kate!!! I love this picture.

The bride carried purple dahlias, free spirit roses, scabiosa pods, berry, and vine.

Love this photo also…

The king table was 88 feet long and featured 7 elevated designs, with a mix of smaller designs in vintage copper pots. I loved seeing the copper on this table!!

Evan transformed the garage into a beautiful area for dancing by providing drapery and lights. Keeping this wedding hidden for the last 11 months has been super hard, I am so glad that we got to share this wedding with you today!!! Happy married life Betty and Anthony, we LOVED your wedding!!!

Chelsea and Damien married this past November at the Westin in Georgetown. Their orange, purple, and white wedding flowers were designed by our studio Holly Heider Chapple Flowers.  The photographs from this wedding were taken by photographer Theresa Choi. This is the second time I have had the pleasure of working with Theresa and each time I have been enthralled with her work.

In truth the colors of this wedding were dark, dark, orange and dark, dark, purple, mixed with white. The dark tones were the operative words, we were not using any medium toned purples or oranges for this wedding and certainly no lavender or peach. I was in all honesty terrified to make this bridal bouquet. I combine orange and purple flowers together all of the time, but I am rarely asked to add in the white. Had the purples and oranges been softer shades the transition to white would have been easier. Dark dark purple mixed with white can look as harsh as black to white. I knew when I started designing I would have to be careful about how I transitioned from the dark purples to the whites. Hesitantly I started to create Chelsea’s bouquet, as I started to design I think I had divine intervention from the flower gods. I somehow started a pattern of color blocking and as it came together all of my fears diminished and I was squealing with delight. The very bouquet that I was afraid to design became one of my favorite creations of the year. Getting all of these designs perfect was really important to me, I adored this bride and the brides mother. Thankfully the clients had given me some creative freedom to bring their designs to life. When asked, they allowed me to add dusty miller and silver brunia into the designs, and this helped with the transition in color. The grey gave me some medium tones to work with. I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am of this bouquet and how thankful I am that Theresa captured Chelsea’s beautiful bouquet so perfectly.

Love these first look images!!

Full lush centerpieces were created with dark purple stock, dark purple carnations, purple anemones, orange roses, purple orchids, white hydrangea, silver brunia, dusty miller, and white roses.

The truly extraordinary cake was designed by Maggie Austin and many thanks also to the planning firm Kelley Cannon Events for their perfect execution of this event.

Guests clearly enjoyed the photo booth!!

Happy married life Chelsea and Damien. Thank you for allowing me this chance to design for you. Many thanks also to MOB for truly being a delight and for letting me be a part of your daughters big day. Your tears of delight over our flowers will always be remembered and appreciated.

I wish I lived closer, so that I could just walk in her door and soak up a little of the beauty and joy around there whenever I felt like it 🙂

You may have seen me tweet that I was creating a bridal bouquet for my dietitian bride. This bridal bouquet was created for Loudoun bride Carlene. Carlene  also writes a great blog called Carlene’s Figments, and she hopes to open a practice here in Loudoun. I used sage, oregano, mint, mini black peppers, brussel sprouts, green beens, asparagus, okra, sugar snap peas, cabbage, and baby carrots in this bouquet. Oh yes I did use some flowers as well, we used orange santana roses, orange dahlias, purple scabiosa flowers, orange spray roses, silver dusty miller and silver brunia.

It’s yummy right? Carlene married at the Thomas Birkby House in Leesburg Va.

This is our Loudoun bride Betsy. I have known Betsy and her family for years and they are awesome. Betsy married at the Rust Sanctuary also in Leesburg. Betsy works for the Town of Leesburg Parks and Rec with the ROCK Program. She works with at-risk kids in an after school and summer program in four neighborhoods identified by the Leesburg Police Department.  Betsy said her kids are the best kiddos around and that they were so excited about the wedding– that they even celebrated with “wedding” cake from costco! 🙂

Betsey’s bouquet was created with white dahlias from Don, white veronica, balsa wood flowers, sahara roses, nigella pods, golden amaranthus, white spray roses, dusty miller, silver brunia, white ranunculus, green seeded euc, and scabiosa pods.

These were both beautiful Loudoun Weddings and I look forward to seeing more of these images from one of my favorite local photographers Bob Updegrove. Both brides used the Holly Heider Chapple Flowers petals to go program.

Our Saturday started bright and early at the 75th running of the Virginia Gold Cup Races. Holly Heider Chapple Flowers acted as the official flower sponsor for the event and we started designing each tent at 7am. Our orchid chandelier was sure to be the most unique design at the event, and we were so proud of this creation.

Isn’t this design a beauty? I would seriously love to do this piece at a wedding!!!!!

Marriott Ranch was the caterer for the event. They met with each client and determined a general look and feel and then we had a meeting just 10 days before the races to bring the decor to life. The look of this tent was inspired by these incredible pillows and the goal was to make this tent look like a plantation house in The Keys. I loved the look and feel of this space and it truly felt like a plantation house. Palm trees and outdoor lounge furniture were used to finish the space

Once I saw these pillows I knew exactly what flowers to use. At this meeting we also agreed to add a blue linen into the tent. This was so freaking beautiful!!

As soon as all of the flowers were in place, we raced back to the studio. Our Saturday included 5 weddings in good old Loudoun County.  FYI we also provided flowers for two amazing weddings on Friday. I wouldn’t want you to think we were slacking any!!! I hope to have pictures of those weddings very soon.

This stunning bride is Caitlin and she married at Rust Sanctuary. She was in love with all white flowers. Her main request was that she have a really big bouquet and she loved tulips. White parrot tulips and white fringed tulips were flown in just for her from California. Her all white bouquet had over 100 white blooms… It was seriously amazing!! I am so glad that I was chosen to design this event. Caitlin seriously needed our resources and abilities to bring her vision to life. The details on this wedding were incredible!! Many thanks to Caitlin’s mom and dad for all of the their creations and support. Mom went shopping for all of the bell jars and dad made some unbelievably awesome teacup markers. Many thanks also to Simply Chic Jess who was the event planner on this wedding.

Her reception featured 3 king tables and 8 round guest tables. Each table had multiple designs. We filled endless bud vases, bell jars, and glass candlesticks to bring this look to life, in fact it was hundreds of vases or designs.

This was truly an amazing wedding. We left this wedding right at 4:00pm to arrive at the Belmont Country Club to design for our bride Kristine. Our design time on this wedding began at 4:30pm.

We have been dreaming of Kristine’s wedding for quite some time.  Working with this bride and her mom was wonderful. Their complete faith and trust in my was so inspiring and I felt compelled as usual to absolutely wow this family….

Her bridal bouquet was created with hot pink cabbage roses, purple roses, lavender spray roses, purple foliage’s, blue berry, purple dahlias, lavender antique hydrangea, and celosia.

Our goal for this wedding was to create something warm and lovely, classic, and romantic but formal. The berry tones of this wedding mixed with the vibrant hot pink were to die for, and the colors were all chosen by my bride. My big challenge came when I was asked to do one of my popcorn stands. I love these little stations but so far I have only done rustic popcorn stands. For this wedding I had to create a formal glamorous popcorn stand. Nice little challenge, but I rocked it. The day I met Kristine, I happened to go to On A Whim Antiques. These little gold nesting tables were calling Kristine’s name, so I bought them. I knew that I would use them on her wedding, I just did not know how. Hello popcorn stand!! In fact every decor element on this table came from On A Whim except for grandmas punch bowl!!

We even painted little chalkboards gold the morning of the wedding!!!

While we handled this wedding Designer Gaby handled our Lansdowne wedding. In fact one of our Friday weddings was at Lansdowne. Designer Linda and Whitney covered our weddings at Weather Lee Farm, and Sunset Hills Vineyard.  Our 7th wedding was at the Thomas Birkby House and it was for our dietitian bride. Her adorable veggie bouquet can be seen in my last post.

Late in the evening I made it to Sunset Hills Vineyard to capture these pictures that warmed my heart!!

In addition to all we did this past weekend we also made a pie delivery to our Weather Lee Farms wedding. My daddy makes the best pie, which he offers at his farmers market, Heiders Farm Market. This year I have been taking dads pie to events. The amazing girls from Events In The City made this fabulous sign for the pie station giving my dad a big shout out!!! This just kills me because it’s my parents hard work ethic that has made me so successful. At 73 years old my daddy works 7 days a week, and he even bakes pie. It’s because of my parents that I can handle this big business and this big family. They were self employed with a home based business and five daughters, and they taught me everything about working hard and raising a big family. Go mom and dad Heider, Go team Chapple.

As you can see this was a truly amazing weekend for us. We reached new heights and we are so proud of our designs. As we grow our focus remains on quality and customer service and seriously, perfectly, inspired designs. We did it again!!!!

This past weekend we provided the flowers for our bride Danielle. She married here groom Timothy at a church in Ashburn and the reception took place at Merriweather Manor in Leesburg Virginia. We got to help with the styling and look of this event and it was such a pleasure to be involved. Many thanks to event planner Kelley Cannon who managed the event.

The bouquets were designed with antique green and purple hydrangea, silver brunia, dusty miller, lavender roses, lady moon roses, clematis vine, dahlias, gomphrena, seeded euc, astrantia, spray roses, and quicksand roses.

We created this sweet pomander for the flower girl.

The brides mother made pillows for the lounge furniture in the colors of the day. The pillows were embroidered with the couples wedding date and their monograms. I loved this idea and I am certain these will be a fabulous keepsake for the couple.

Our candy bar was a huge success and it was so large that we had to extend the design across the mantel.

We also provided a popcorn bar with popcorn from my daddies store Heider Farm Market.

The popcorn stand was styled with our vintage props and antiques.

Centerpieces were created in an eclectic mix of silver vessels, mercury glass, and crystal votive stands.

The incredible wedding cake and grooms cake was designed by Jason of Market Salamander. This wedding was such a pleasure to design and style. I am so thrilled with the work we did for this event. Happy married life Danielle and Timothy, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your wedding.
